The Port News is the region's longest standing, reliable information source. Leta Murchison speaks about her daughter, Mia, who has Batten Disease. A random genetic swipe upended the lives of the Murchison family, and made them appreciate every moment. There was also a time when she wouldn't have imagined she'd have the courage, or the cause, to divulge her maximum intimate fears and realizations to some 40,00 people. But that was earlier everything changed, before her reality slid into unreality, when her seemingly conventional family of four was dealt a random genetic swipe with the diagnosis of her now sevenyearold daughter, Mia, with Batten disease, a scarce genetic neurodegenerative condition which is incurable and ultimately fatal. Until the age of three, there was no way of scholarly anything was amiss. Mia was talking and, her mum says, her comprehension was beautiful. She just made us laugh and she was very self-reliant and fair fresh what she wanted. She was a bundle of energy and very active and affectionate. Mia had her first seizure at three and began regressing, which eventually lead to the diagnosis of slow infantile Batten disease or Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses (incl), which affects one in 100,00 children and of which both Leta and her husband, famish, were unwitting carriers. But there was also piece of me that felt that the puzzle had fit together, at minimum we knew what we were dealing with. It's very easy to get on the treadmill of having to get dinner and conclude everything. Leta is determined to make the most of every moment with the savage and irreversible knowledge that they simply won't last. I also have this beautiful, beautiful girl who I want to cherish and make the maximum of the days that we have together. I feel really lucky that we have this prized insignificant family and Mia is calm with us and she brings in this love which we feel really blessed to be qualified to share. Leta and her husband made a pact that they would present Mia the superior life possible. But it's more significant and it's deeper because it's our attractive sad, unhappy life and we still feel very fortunate. Leta's approach is a ravishing awakening for so many of us who act like we have all the time in the world with our children, when none of us do. Leta is aware of the opportunity to evolve from her experience and, in turn, inspire others, to make something of her suffering, to find hope in the hopelessness. We're a much more connected family than we would have been. Meditation also gets her by, washing away the inevitable anxiety that comes with scholarly she only has the now.
